Melvin James Butler, of the 6900 block of Adele Drive, died Sunday, June 2, 1996, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Butler was a member of First Pentecostal Church and remained there until his illness. He was retired on disability from Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Butler; two sons, Kwauna Butler and Chike Butler; mother, Evangelist Margaret Butler McElroy; a brother, Joe Butler of Chesapeake; a sister, Rosa Taylor of Norfolk; mother-in-law, Elsie Odom of Norfolk; father-in-law, Thomas Odom of Norfolk; and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Holland Butler.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in First Pentecostal Church, Wilson Road and Cypress Street, Norfolk, by the Rev. A. Raulson. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The wake will be Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Graves Funeral Home. The family will assemble at the residence.
