Shirley “JoAnn” Mattox, age 86 of Mattoon, IL passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 3:46 PM at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.

A funeral service in her honor will be held at 12:00 PM, Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Avenue, Mattoon, IL 61938; Reverend Steve Hays and Reverend Steve Morgan will officiate. A committal service will be held immediately after at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. The visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.

JoAnn was born on July 9, 1932 in Ash Grove Township, IL, the daughter of the late Carl and Leah (Storm) Ellis. She married Robert “Bob” Mattox on December 9, 1950 in Mattoon, IL; he passed away on January 15, 1994.

She is survived by her three children; Robert E. Mattox and wife Tonia of Mattoon, IL, John M. Mattox and friend Denise Patton of Peoria, AZ, and Mary Ann Collins and life partner Sue Arveson of Palos, IL; five grandchildren, Angel Mattox and friend Doug Towle of Mattoon, IL, Eric Mattox and wife Rachel of Mattoon, IL, Jackie Mattox of Mattoon, IL, Jeri Mattox of Tulsa, OK, Elana Arverson of Palos, IL; three great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

JoAnn was a member of the First Christian Church in Mattoon, IL. She retired from Community Unit #2 as a Director of Food Service. After retirement, she devoted her time as volunteer for the Life Span Center, Mattoon Community Food Center, and RSVP for numerous years. She traveled with tour groups all out west, and her most memorable trip was to Yellowstone National Park with her cousins.

JoAnn enjoyed reading, camping, and attending plays at The Little Theatre. She loved life, family and animals, especially her German Shepard, Jim. JoAnn was always there to brighten the lives of others.
