Abbie McKindred Fox Jr., 87, died June 11, 2007. Known to everyone as Mac, he was born in Roanoke, Va., Oct. 26, 1919, to the Rev. Abbie McKindred Fox Sr. and Ada Wagner Fox. He was preceded in death by his son, Cameron Walter Fox and two sisters, Eloise McCormick and Madyline Pippin. A devoted husband and loving father, he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Shwab Fox; daughters, Laurie Fox Todd and Abbie-Stuart Fox; grandchildren, Abbie-Stuart Sinclair, Andrew McKindred Todd, Abigail Pachon, Anna Zarcone, Luke Zarcone, their spouses; and a host of much adored great-grandchildren. As a veteran of World War II, Mac served in the Army in Ireland, England, Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He received the Purple Heart, Silver Star and Good Conduct medals. He was a proud graduate of the University of Virginia School of Engineering and owner of the general contracting firm, Fox Sadler. He received many awards and commendations for his work throughout his career. Mac was active in the community serving on numerous local boards in Virginia and Florida. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, formerly Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach and currently St. Augustine of Canterbury in Vero Beach, Fla.
Mac was an extremely kind and loving person. He believed strongly in his family, his country and personal commitment to others, especially those in need. He had great faith in God which gave him strength, courage and the calm, enduring patience he was so admired for. When asked what he wanted people to remember about him, Mac answered that he wanted everyone to know that he was thankful for having a wonderful life with a wonderful family and many wonderful friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Christopher Thompson. The burial will immediately follow in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine of Canterbury, 475 43rd Ave., Vero Beach, FL 32968 or the University of Virginia Engineering Foundation in honor of Abbie Fox ‘51 at Box 400256, Charlottesville, VA 22904. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
