James Cullen Barr was born in Chicago Illinois. He graduated from Loyola Academy in 1943 and then enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served as a Radio Dispatcher in the Asiatic Pacific Sphere, He was initiated into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep having crossed the Equator on board the U.S.S. Barnwell on the 14th of August 1945. He was honorably discharged on 19th of July 1946. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology. He worked for Johnson Controls before starting his own business, Barr Mechanical Sales, Inc. in 1960. He had a spirit of adventure and loved to tinker and could fix almost anything. He married the love of his life in 1953 and together they raised 6 children in Wilmette and Lake Bluff. He was active in volunteering for his children’s schools. He was a founding parent of the Willows Academy for Girls and served on its Board. He enjoyed sharing his love of adventure with his family by travelling the country in a motor home. To escape the risk of Polio and from the time he was a young boy he summered in Fontana, Wisconsin, it was there that he grew to love lake life and learned to sail. When he was in his twenties he owned and sailed an E Scow and piloted small planes. With six children under age 14 he bought a 16-foot sailboat to introduce his family to the sport of sailing. Because the quarters were too tight so he searched for a suitable lake home to share the joy of sailing and family time. That search led him to Lake Beulah and it was there that many memories and friends were made. He sailed a C-scow and then was one of the founding members of the MC Fleet. He rejoiced in the joy of watching his children race and often would take an extra tack himself to have a better viewpoint of the finish of the race. He was a longstanding member of Lake Beulah Yacht Club and served as a Lake Beulah Sailing School Board of Director. In his senior years, he and his wife wintered in Naples, Florida and were members of Audubon Country Club. Together with his wife he enjoyed golfing, tennis and frequent visits from their children and grandchildren. His family and faith were his greatest joys and comfort.
