St. Mary's Cemetery is immediately west of Lake Forest Cemetery and was once connected to it by a footbridge over a ravine. The ravine leads to Lake Michigan. This cemetery is a part of the original section of land designated as a cemetery by the Lake Forest Association. In 1883, the City of Lake Forest deeded to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago lot seven and part of lot one "to be used as a burial grounds for the dead." In 1956, Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, IL became responsible for the maintenance of St. Mary's Cemetery.
