Mrs. Mattie Lee Young, of Vallejo, passed away Nov. 1, 2011.She was born in Swiftown, Mississippi, to Jessie Davis and Lilly Hemphill Davis.
After graduating from high school, Mattie enlisted in the United States Air Force. When her tour of duty ended, Mattie attended Mississippi Valley State University and San Francisco State University majoring in and earning a degree in Business Administration.
During the War on Poverty, Mattie was a neighborhood organizer in the Sacramento area, while working for the Housing and Redevelopment Agency of Sacramento. She and her husband, Cleveland, mentored youth throughout their lifetime together.
Mattie continued her civic interests through memberships in various clubs, most current being Soroptimist International of Vallejo Gateway, SI 0akland, Founder Region District III and SI Sacramento, Sierra Pacific Region. Vallejo Women's Club, The Red Hat Society and Mississippi Valley State University Alumni Club. Mattie also owned Then 'n Now Dollie Fashions.
Mattie is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Lilly Davis, and her daughter Renee Young. She will be missed by her loving husband Cleveland Young, brothers, Chandler Davis of Pearcy, Arkansas and Edward Davis of Carpenterville, Illinois; cousins Tony Phillips of San Ramon, CA and Willey Lee Hughes of Toledo, Ohio. Plus a host of extended family and treasured friends.
Memorial services will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Nov. 20, 2011 at Vallejo Women's Club, 200 Valle Vista St., Vallejo, CA.
