Major league baseball player from 1959 to 1963. After beginning his career in 1953 in the Boston Red Sox minor league system, he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1957. Eli pitched for the Yankees in 1959 and 1960, briefly appearing in the 1960 World Series. He was the first selection by the Los Angeles Angels in the 1961 expansion draft and threw a complete game in the very first game in Angels' franchise history. Eli pitched for Los Angeles through the 1963 season. After his career ended, he coached and managed in the minor leagues semi-regularly through the early 1990's. He also served as a scout for the Philadelphia Phillies for five years, retiring in 1997.
