Virginia Ruth Houck was the third child of Bertha Lee Fleming and Edward Jerome Houck. She was given the first name Virginia for her grandmother, Nina Virginia Nelson, and Ruth for her aunt, Maud Ruth Houck. After she married, she dropped the first name.

Her siblings were Myrtle, Bud, Lena,
Mary Lee, and Betty Jo Orders, who survived her but is now deceased.

She married Archie Lamkin and they had two children, Lynn and Larry.

Ruth loved flowers and gardening and for many years ran a greenhouse at her home. Later, Ruth ran the Jenny Lynn shop in Lenoir, North Carolina. Although brought up in the Methodist Church she became a member of the Baptist Church after her marriage to Archie. After graduating from Morganton High School, she worked at Morganton Full Fashioned Hosiery Mill. After her marriage she ran a greenhouse for 15 years and later owned and operated the Jenny Lynn Shop for another 10-12 years.

Ruth loved to shop, go to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and go boating and camping on Lake James in Western North Carolina. Her granddaughter Ginger and great granddaughter Katie were the focus of her life. To them, she was always their "Punkin".

Ruth posted as "Mourning Dove" on Findagrave.com.

Ruth died peacefully in her sleep on a Sunday morning. She will be mourned and missed by her family and friends.
