Obituary: Smith T Woolworth--Suffered a Stroke of Apoplexy and Never Recovered Consciousness
The sudden death of Smith T. Woolworth, Thursday morning, removes another of Watertown's strong men. His death was due to apoplexy. He suffered a stroke Tuesday and remained unconscious until the end. He was born in Pinckney, Lewis county, Feb. 14, 1849, the only child of Gilbert E. and Elizabeth Smith Woolworth.
He obtained his early education in the common schools near his native home in Martinsburg and Deer River and at Lowville Academy. After completing his scholastic work Mr. Woolworth returned to his father's farm, where he remained until 1864. He then located in Carthage, securing a position in a bank. The following year he came to Watertown and accepted a position in the bank of C. G. Harger & Son, where he remained until 1869, when he was compelled to retire on account of ill health.
After a short experience in a newspaper office he entered the employ of the banking firm of George F. Paddock & Co., and in 1871 was chosen cashier of the Jefferson County National bank, in which position he continued until his death.
On July 22, 1873, Mr. Woolworth was married to Anna Wilhelmina Clark, by who he is survived. Four of six children born to them survive; Gilbert of Washington, D. C. and Misses Elizabeth, Amy and Wilhelmina Woolworth, all of this city.--Saturday, August 17, 1907, The Watertown Herald--http://news.nnyln.net/watertown-herald/search.html
