Charles was the second son of John & Caroline (Souls) Musser.
He had eight siblings, seven sisters and one brother.
He married Emily Jane Triplett and had 10 children between 1868 and 1895, only six surviving into adulthood. Five years to the day after his wife Emily died, the old soldier himself, at the age of ninety-five, faded away on March 10, 1938--the last Civil War veteran in Dawson County and perhaps the last surviving member of the 29th Iowa. With full honors, he was buried under the Union Flag.
