Married Lucy Backus. Came to Nebraska from Attica New York with three other men starting in 1854 traveling to Buffalo New York at first then to Monroe Michigan by steamboat, by rail to Davenport Iowa, then To Burlington Iowa and on to Council Bluffs Iowa. He crossed the Missouri River and purchased 650 acres within Omaha and served in the first legislature of Nebraska in 1855 and was Douglas County treasurer from 1854-1856. He was on the committee to erect the first county building, the first courthouse and the first jail. Was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Methodist Church. Lived at the corner of 15th and Davenport Street. While in the legislature sponsored bills regulating loose hogs, liquor sales, billiards and bowling and suppression of gambling.
