Clem was born in Germany in about 1861. (Age was on the marriage record)
Their first child, Frank, was born in Clinton County. In the Iowa 1885 state census Clem is 24, Barbara is 22 and Frank is just born.
The Clem and Barbara Krogman I am looking for were married in Clinton County Iowa in 1883. Barbara was born in Clinton County in about 1862.
Her parents were Bernard John and Anna Mary Wubben Arkenberg. Clem was born in Germany in about 1861. (Age was on the marriage record)Their first child, Frank, was born in Clinton County. In the Iowa 1885 state census Clem is 24, Barbara is 22 and Frank is just born.
screen. I think I found them through the later census; however, birth years are not always consistent so I began to wonder if there were 2
Clem and Barbara Krogman families and which one belonged to me.The stone in the New Underwood cemetery has these dates:Barbie b. 6-20-1853d. 10-29-1932 Clemb. 7-28-1850 d 9-9-1939 Frank b. 2-14-1887 d. 1-14-1936
This is some of the information I collected before finding the grave stone:
In 1900 census Clem and Barbara Krogman and children living in Holman Township, Osceola County, Iowa. Dates of birth were:Nov, 1862 Clem Jun, 1864 Barbara Feb, 1884 Frank H Apr, 1886 Henry J.Jul,
1887 Barbara M Sep, 1890 AnnaOct 1892 Lizzie C Sep 1895 John
A Jun 1898 Clemens B
In 1910, Clem and Barbara are still in Osceola but much older than they should be and have three more children Dick, age 11 Lena, age 9 Mannie, age 6 and their children Barbara and Clemens are not listed. The daughter may have married and the son may have died but I haven't found records to support that.
In 1915, Clem and Barbara are in Garfield Township, Clark County, South Dakota. Ages listed were:Clem. age 59 Barbara, age 57 Frank, age 31 Henry, age 28 John, age 19 Dick, age 17 Lena, age 14 Mame, age 11 (Eva Maria on Iowa birth records)and their children Anna and Lizzie are not listed. They may have married.
In 1920, Clem and Barbara are in Logan, Clark County and John is not listed. I have his obituary. He enlisted in the service in WW I, discharged in 1919 and married Lena Mehlberg on October 30, 1919, lived in Clark County for awhile and eventually moved back to Iowa where he died in 1981. His obit gives the names of his parents, including Barbara's maiden name.
In the 1915 census, Clem and Barbara are in Owanka and still there in 1930 with children Frank and Dick. In 1935 it is just Clem and Frank in Owanka.I believe their daughter, Lena, married Harvey Habben in 1910 in
Iowa and she died on July 12, 1989 in Rapid City.
