Dr. James Robert Bryson, 81, passed away Saturday, April 27th, 2019, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born to Robert and Clarice Yarbrough Bryson, he grew up in the Jericho community and was a member of Jericho Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, taught various Sunday School classes, and served on numerous committees. After having taught in New Albany Public Schools, Itawamba Community College, and East Union, he worked in several positions in the New Albany Public Schools and served as superintendent from 1974-1992. He was also adjunct assistant professor at the University of Mississippi, taught at Blue Mountain College, served as a member of the Union County Board of Education, and worked as a discipline officer in Tupelo Public Schools. He enjoyed traveling with his family, spending time with his children and grandchildren, researching genealogy, and looking after his dogs. Being a caring person, he always encouraged his students and others to do their best. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Annette Mills Bryson; three sons: Bob Bryson, Baldwyn, Jim Bryson (Suzie), Madison, and Kerry Bryson (Diana), Guntown; six grandchildren: Carley Rhudy, Laken Hogue (Ky), Lindsey Bryson, Keillia Bryson, Emma Claire Bryson, and Walker Bryson. He was preceded in death by his parents. Pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School class. Visitation will be an hour before the service.at Jericho Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 30th. The service celebrating his life will be held at 2 pm with Dr. Chester Harrison and Bro. Marvin Robbins officiating. Waters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and assisting the family. Burial will follow in Jericho Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Jericho Baptist Church, 2079 CR 171 Guntown, MS 38849 or a charity of your choice.
