Catherine Giroux was born on 20 Jan 1820, in Saint-Constant, Lower Canada (Quebec), British North America, to Marcel and Marie Catherine (Jolivet) Giroux.

She married Peter Amel on 27 Feb 1843, in St-Remi, Lower Canada, British North America. In 1846, Catherine and her family immigrated to the United States, where they settled in Black Brook, Clinton, New York.

In 1868-1869, Catherine, and her family relocated to Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Those joining her included:
