Slovak Socialist Republic Prime Minister. He received recognition serving as a Slovak academic, lawyer and politician. He studied law at the Comenius University in Bratislava, graduating in 1950. After graduation in 1956, he taught civil and family law at the University of Bratislava as an associate professor, becoming professor of civil law in 1964. From 1963 to 1968, he served at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. He was a member of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia before being a member of the Slovak Communist Party, serving as president from 1969 and 1971. Under the Czechoslovakia Communists Party in 1968, he was made president of the Federal Assembly. In 1969 he was made Prime Minister of the Slovak Socialist Republic, replacing the previous Prime Minister Stefan Sádovský, who had a five-month term. He served in the office of Prime Minister for 19 years. After resigning from premiership in 1988, he was appointed Czechoslovak ambassador to France, serving until January of 1990. He was one of the leaders interrogated for their role in Operation Danube or the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union, Poland, Bulgaria and Hungary in August of 1968. He was accused and arrested for abuse of power and theft in the 1970s and 1980s, but fought and disputed all accusations against him and the charges were eventually dropped in June of 1990. During his lifetime, he published, as the author or co-author, textbooks on law: "Personal Property" in 1956 and "Our Socialist Constitution" in 1961.
