Son of William Tiernan and Margaret McMaster, husband of Helen Lempi Smith, whom he married on June 30, 1929 in Mamaroneck, NY, and father of Helen Eleanor and James Joseph Tiernan.

Marriage - James Joseph Tiernan, 22, clerk, 526 LaSalle Street, New York City, born in New York City, New York, the son of William Tiernan and Margaret McMaster, both of Ireland, and Helen Lempi Smith, 20, Hemstitcher, 18 Underhill Avenue, Mamaroneck, born Ansonia, Connecticut, the daughter of George Smith and Anna Aloka, both of the United States, were married on June 30, 1929 at Mamaroneck, NY, by the Rev. John J. Transky, Clergyman, and witnessed by Mrs. A. J. Fontsostis and Mr. A.J. Fontsostis.

In 1930, James J. Tiernan, aged 21, born in New York, was living at 198 East 101 St., Manhattan, NY, with his wife, Helen Lempi Tiernan, aged 19, born in Connecticut. He was shown to be a clerk in an office.

"They were very much in love. A letter from the young husband to a friend, dated the following October 4, contained this burbling account: "Lots of things have happened to me since I last saw you and they are positively true. They all can be proven so I'll line them up for you. I ran away from home. (You can call it that.) I was married on June 30, 1929. I married a blonde - blue-eyed at that. I live in New York City in a one-family house. I worked for Franzier's Inc., which is one of the biggest fish companies in the world, if not the biggest. I have a fine position with lots of advancement and make fine money. I have no children. I say that because everyone thinks the wife and I are superhuman. I haven't seen Bergenfield for three months at least and to tell the truth, I don't want to. I am in extra fine health and oh boy am I enjoying myself. Well you know how you enjoyed yourself and what it means to get someone to love you and take care of you. I am not being sentimental, but that is the way I feel. I am happy." The letter recounted that "we have our own apartment" at 152 E. 124th St. The end of the idyl came on June 7, 1933. A record from the Medical Examiner's office, released by the police, showed that "James Tiernan, 24, of 522 W. 45th St.", was found dead of heart disease at 1:30 a.m. that day. Assistant Medical Examiner Charles Cassasa had found "Blood coming from the nose and mouth: but the case was marked: "Sudden death. Nothing suspicious. No autopsy."
