Born Helen Shepherd (she used Ellen in the US), parents unknown, she married in Forfar, Angus, Scotland on October 25th, 1829 to David Brown.

The couple had eight children in Scotland prior to immigrating to the US in 1841. They settled in Virgil Township, Kane Co., IL near Lodi (now Maple Park) where their last two children (twin boys) were born. After the Civil War they retired from farming and moved in to Maple Park.

The inscription appears to list 1873 but according the Commemorative Biographical & Historical Record of Kane Co., IL she died March 16, 1878.

Gravesite Details

Only Ellen has an inscription on the Brown monument. At its base is propped the broken marker for her daughters Mary J & Ellen J.
