From the Rich Hill Review, Thursday, June 16, 1910 - "Mrs. Seward died at Pittsburg, Kansas, last Thursday and was buried at Fairview Cemetery Sunday afternoon. She was the widow of Eli Seward, who died eight or ten years ago. They were old settlers in this neighborhood, coming here in the sixties, moved to Rich Hill a number of years ago. A few years ago they moved to Pittsburg, where Mrs. Seward died. She leaves two sons and a daughter. The family have the sympathy of friends in this vicinity." We know the cemetery to be known today as Rider-Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Rider Cemetery.

From the 1900 federal census, Rich Hill Ward 2, Bates, Missouri we find the following: Eli J. Seward born Jan. 1841 Indiana; Mary A. Seward (wife) born Sep. 1845 New York, married in 1864; Warren D. Seward (son) born July 1867 Wisconsin; Roy Seward (son) born Nov. 1873 Minnesota; and Carrie B. Seward (daughter) born June 1880 Missouri. The children were all single and living with their parents. They lived in Ward 2 of the city on Poplar Street."Mrs. Elye Seward was buried Sunday at the Fairview cemetery. Mrs. Seward for many years lived in and near Rich Hill, but at the time of her death was living in Pittsburg, Kans. She leaves two sons and one daughter. The two sons and their families accompanied the remains and after spending Sunday night with their aunt, Mrs. Eastland, returned Monday to Pittsburg."

Gravesite Details

Contributor Cameron Herrell (47967691) reports "The cemetery she and Eli are buried in is Fairview-Rider, also known as Rider-Fairview in Bates County Cemeteries book. And this is where I took the picture of the stone" (16 Apr 2019).
