Father Bernard Joseph Michalik, OFM Conv. was born, August 1921, in Detroit, Michigan to Marion Michalik and Louise Wolko-wicz, both natives of Poland. He entered the Conventual Franciscans as a novice, August 14, 1939, in Ellicott City, Maryland . Following his ordination in 1947 Fr. Bernard began a long and varied ministry as teacher, chaplain, associate pastor and pastor in the Midwest and eventually throughout California and Nevada. In his years of semi-retirement, he was devoted to the care of the Catholic community in New Cuyama and faithfully traveled there weekly from Pismo Beach to pro-vide pastoral care. Fr. Bernard was priest for over 64 years and a professed member of his Conventual Francis-can religious order for almost 71 years, He will be remembered as a gracious and dignified gentleman, whose kindness marked his ministry. He died, July 21, 2011, at his retirement residence in Pismo Beach.
