Conventual Franciscan priest

On August 19, 2005 our confrere Fr. Caesar (Cesere) Inserra was called to his eternal reward. Fr. Caesar had been a resident at Mercy Care Center in Oakland, California for over five years, after a series of bone fractures and complications from painful arthritis necessitated more comprehensive care. It was at Mercy Care Center that Sister Death met Father during the evening hours. Caesar Inserra was born on January 15, 1922, in the province of Catania, Sicily in the town of Vizzini, a son of Salvatore Inserra and his wife Josephine Guzzardi. In 1939 he entered the novitiate of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual in the Sicilian Province of Saints Agatha and Lucy. Taking the religious name Ferdinand, he was permitted, in view of the exigencies of the Second World War, to make first profession of his vows on March 3, 1940. Young friar Ferdinand and his classmates continued with their early formation against the backdrop of the war, finally professing their solemn vows on May 28, 1944. The war having ended, Friar Ferdinand (Caesar) continued with studies for the priesthood and was ordained in Palermo on March 22, 1947. Following ordination Fr. Caesar was assigned to teach Latin in the minor seminary of the Sicilian province. In subsequent years he would serve in parochial assignments in Palermo, Custonaci and then at the Marian Shrine in Messina as Guardian. In 1967 Fr Caesar was selected by his confreres to serve as the Secretary of the Sicilian province.
Wishing to be nearer to his only brother, then living in New York, Fr. Caesar came to the United States in 1970 and was affiliated with the Immaculate Conception province for a number of years. He briefly returned to his beloved Sicily in the late 1970's. Then, in 1980, Fr. Caesar was welcomed to serve among the friars of the newly forming province of St. Joseph of Cupertino in California. For the next ten years Fr. Caesar would engage in parochial ministry and hospital ministry throughout California, Nevada and Arizona. During the 1990's, Father entered semi-retirement as his health began to decline. Almost 66 years after beginning his novitiate and well over 65 years in religious profession, a priest of 58 years, Fr. Caesar Inserra fell asleep in the Lord.
