Sister death came suddenly for Brother Louis in Los Angeles on August 27, 1988. He suffered a major heart attack while at the Los Angeles International Airport.
Brother Louis was born on July 20, 1936 in Wyandotte, Michigan, a suburb of Detriot. He met the friars at St. Anthony Monastery in Detroit and entered the Order on August 15, 1956, at Saint Bonaventure Novitiate in Lake Forest, Illinois. A year later he professed his first vows and on August 16, 1960 he made his solemn profession.
After profession Louis spent sever years at St. Anthony's in Detroit serving as cook, with other duties about the friary. He continued this ministry in Lake Forest for another two years. Then followed a two and a half year assignment at St. Hedwig Cemetery in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, where he functioned as office manager. Several assignments followed in Torrance, CA, Rockford, Il, Pismo Beach, CA. and Marytown in Kenosha, WI. By the early 1970's Louis was back in Lake Forest, Il., where he began his nursing education and hospital ministry. He continued at St. Anthony's in Rockford, Il. and the Mission House in Hartland, WI, before returning to California in 1975 to stay. He completed his nursing education while in Torrance and began ministry at Little Company of Mary Hospital. With the formation of the custody, he moved north with the Custos and novitiate community to help found St. Francis Friary in Oakland. He worked at St. Rose Hospital in nearby Hayward. When the Province was founded in 1981, he moved south for his final assignment to Our Lady of Guadalupe Friary in Hermosa Beach. There he worked in parochial ministry with part time employment at J.S. Paluch Computer Division, doing hospital ministry and performing services for White and Day Mortuary. Between it all he found time to travel, promoting tours and pilgrimages for Wiegel Tours in Springfield, MA. Through those efforts he was able to be present for Saint Maximilian Kolbe's canonization and received Holy Communion from the Holy Father, a personal joy for him. The wake service for Brother Louis was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Hermosa Beach on August 31. The funeral Mass of Resurrection was celebrated on the evening of September 1. He was buried on September 2nd in the Province Cemetery, Arroyo Grande, CA. May he rest in peace.
