David Oscar McKinney, 79 of Baxter Springs, KS passed from this life on Friday, April 12, 2019 at his home in Baxter Springs.

David was born on May 26, 1939, the second twin to Raymond and Helen (Richards) McKinney in Geuda Springs, KS. After his birth he and his family lived in a few towns in Kansas and California. His younger brother Phillip was born in 1941 and died three days later. His second younger brother, Donald L. McKinney was born January 24, 1943 in Antioch, California.

David and his family finally settled in Columbus in June, 1954, where he met his lifelong love Leota I. Scott. He graduated from Cherokee County Community High School May 18, 1957.

David Married his life long love, Leota Scott on July 18, 1957 in Columbus, KS.

David was called into active duty in the United States Navy in November 1957. He went to San Diego, CA boot camp. From there he was sent to Class A School in Bainbridge, Maryland, where their oldest son, David P. McKinney was born on April 27, 1958. From Bainbridge David went to the Philippines for 19 months. His wife and son lived in Columbus during this period. David got orders to go to the Naval Security Group in Washington D.C. in December 1959. There his oldest daughter, Cynthia L. (McKinney) Boettcher was born December 3, 1960 and his youngest daughter Helen I. McKinney was born December 1, 1961. Both of them were born at the National Navy Medical Center. They left D.C. January 1963 to Chinese Language School at Fort Ord, California U.S. Army Base. After graduating from Chinese Language School, David went to the U.S. Navy Comm Station in Hakata, Japan. His family joined him in March 1964. Their youngest son Danny R. McKinney was born December 30, 1964 at the U.S. Navy Hospital Sasebo, Japan.

David and his family were stationed in Japan, Taiwan, Guam, NSA Ft. Meade, MD and Guam was their last duty station and they returned home in 1977 settling in Baxter Springs, KS.

David retired from the U.S Navy in August 1977 and later retired from Eagle Picher in 2001.

He earned an Associate's Degree from Labette Community College on May 7, 1982.

Besides his brother Phillip, David was preceded in death by his twin brother Richard Dalton McKinney "Dick" and his parents, Raymond and Helen McKinney.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 15, 2019 at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Randy Arnold and Ronnie Johnson will officiate.

Family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.

Burial will follow in the Baxter Springs Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Victory Life Church in care of the funeral home.

Arrangement's are under the direction of Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.
