Graduating from Centre College in 1950 with degrees in English and Drama, Nancy worked in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley in the tourism industry. From there, she found a secretarial position at Virginia Tractor Company in Richmond, where she met a handsome young engineer named Ralph Allen Amos. They were married soon after, raised a family, ran a real estate business, and enjoyed many years together until Ralph's death in 2001.
