Nancy Hallet Jefferson, 71, of Newcastle, died April 5 at Maine Medical Center after a long battle with lung cancer. Born June 26, 1934 in Charlottesville, Va., she was the daughter of Mary and Carl Averill. Following her father’s death when she was two years old, her mother later married Augustus F. Lange who became the father who brought her up. In 1952 she graduated from George Washington High School. Following high school she took secretarial courses. She lived in Alexandria, Va., and went to work as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. On Jan. 21, 1956, she married Richard M. Hallet, Jr., of Boothbay Harbor. The couple lived on Long Island, N.Y., for two years and then moved to Marion, Mass., where they lived for about 10 years. While living in Marion, they spent summers at their Powder Hill Farm home in Boothbay Harbor, which they purchased in the early 1960s, and moved there permanently after her husband’s retirement. She was active with the Girl Scouts, was a volunteer at Miles Memorial Hospital, was treasurer and membership chairman for the Maine Morgan Horse Club, was a member of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, and worked as assistant to the director of the Boothbay Chamber of Commerce. He husband died in 1983. Several years later she married a close family friend, Dana B. Jefferson. They lived at his home in Newcastle until his death in 1995. In 2005 she moved to a new home at St. Andrews Village. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Hallet Witt of Boothbay Harbor, and Jennifer H. Hallet of Dayton, Ohio; one grandson, Samuel Parker Witt; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Mary Witt; sister-in-law, Nancy Hallet Woods of Boothbay; and two cousins. Memorial service held at the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle, Tues., April 11 with Rev. Sarah Foulger of the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church officiating. Following cremation, her ashes will be buried with her first husband, Richard M. Hallet Jr., in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay.
