Professional Football Player. He won the 1960 Heisman Trophy as a halfback for the United States Naval Academy and later played two seasons for the American Football League's Boston Patriots. Born Joseph Michael Bellino, he entered the United States Naval Academy in the fall of 1957 and was both an outstanding player in baseball and football during his tenure there. It was a football that would make famous as he was awarded the 1960 Heisman Trophy for his spectacular senior season at the naval academy. He was also awarded the Maxwell Award after the 1960 season. He was drafted by both the National Football League's Washington Redskins and the American Football League's Boston Patriots in their respective 1961 drafts, but served out his four years of active military service before joining the Patriots in 1965. He played for the Patriots for three years before being selected in the 1968 AFL expansion draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He left professional football after this and did not play a down for his new team. His career statistics included rushing for 115 yards with one touchdown. He remained in the Navy as a reservist and retired in 1976 with the rank of captain. He also was a successful businessman in the Boston, Massachusetts area and coached football at a small Catholic school for one year.
