It was while camped beneath these vermilion cliffs (Jacob's Pools**) Addie Sirrine recorded the first death of the company.
"...That night Grandfather (Charles?) Crismon's Indian Dick died...William Crismon* and Jesse D Hobson stayed there and buried him...they went up on the side of the mountain and got a sandstone for a headstone...William Crismon chiseled the name "Dick Crismon" and put that up...then they came on and camped with us that night at Soap Creek."
Dick, as he was called, was an Indian boy Charles had purchased to save from slavery. He adopted the young boy and Dick lived with the family. Dick had been helping with the stock of the company. Since he had a history of lung trouble, it was presumed he died of consumption.
Arizona's Honeymoon Trail Mormon Wagon Roads (Edited by Norma Baldwin Ricketts), 239.

*William Crismon (KWBB-WYV) was likely Charles 22 year old son.
*Jessie D. Hobson (KW6Z-FPN) 27 years old.
**Jacob's Pools - See George Warren Sirrine Life History (KWJZ-XX6)
Note: Charles W Sirrine's wife, Esther Crismon, was Charles Crismon's daughter.
