Edwin was born to Julius Augustus Caesar Austin and Octavia Ann Lane. He had three siblings: Louisa Maria, Newton Francis, and Julia Ann. Edwin was a passenger as a young child on the Mormon emigrant Ship Brooklyn. He married Alnora Naomi Lane on 17 April 1863 in Centreville, Sanpete, Utah. They had eleven children: Lyda Estella, Edwin Augustus, DeLaFayette Mead, Quincy Knowlton, Alnora May, Maud, Edith, Ray, Elaine, Hattie, and Hyrum Lane. He married 2nd, Emma Wood, Alnora's half sister, on 29 October 1872 in Salt Lake City. They had ten children: Clarence Sheldon, Arta Chase, Claude, Mark, Nellie, Torrey Lynn, Samuel Matthews, Horatius Nelson, Roy Irl, and Otis Rolla. Edwin was LDS Bishop for 44 years and first sheriff of Bear Lake County, Idaho. He served a brief mission in San Diego, California where he located the grave of Sam Brannan in 1898. Edwin died May 23, 1920 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is buried in Liberty, Bear Lake, Idaho.
