Cheryl Ann Hoppel was born October 8, 1949 to Priscilla (Korte) and Clement Hoppel in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Cheryl attended schools in Sioux Falls, SD and graduated from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD with a teaching degree in music. Following her baccalaureate education, Cheryl married Robert Buchanan in Sioux Falls, SD on May 15, 1971 at First United Methodist Church.

Cheryl and her husband first resided in Denver, CO and then moved to Aberdeen, SD where she served for a time on a welcoming committee for the town of Aberdeen. She then moved to Morgantown, WV and worked for the University of West Virginia while supporting her husband’s graduate education. Later she worked for the state of West Virginia in Charleston as an administrative assistant. Cheryl and her husband continued on to the Washington D.C. area where they spent the next 23 years. During that time, Cheryl began raising a family while working part time in education. Cheryl and Bob were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Nicole and Jacqueline. After deciding to raise their daughters close to family, they moved to Sioux Falls where she worked in various positions. Her last position was with Wells Fargo for 12 years from which she retired in 2006. Throughout her career she taught private piano lessons and was extremely proud of serving as a choir director in church.

Throughout her life, music was her passion. She was a pianist and vocalist and loved sharing her passion with her family. Music always filled her home. Most of all, Cheryl loved taking care of her family. In later life she cared for her mother Priscilla. She was a devoted and faithful wife as well as the most remarkable mother. Her time revolved around her children. Every interest they pursued she championed. To describe her as selfless is a true understatement. She unwaveringly donated to charities close to her heart. She always gave her time and support to those she loved. Most importantly to Cheryl, she passed along her endless faith to Nicole and Jacqueline. She taught them to stay strong, to always think positively and to find enjoyment through laughter and compassion.

Forever grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Robert Buchanan; two daughters, Nicole Buchanan and Jacqueline (Travis) Hackett and their children, Audrey and Miles; and brother Brent (Marjorie) Hoppel.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, Clement and Priscilla Hoppel; and parents-in-law W.A. and Virginia Buchanan.
