She was born on November 15, 1921, north of Towanda, a daughter of Lawrence and Lilah Busick Abbott. In 1940,Doris married William Hays and later Rozelle Weakley. After Rozelle’s death she married Farran Brown and later to James McGahan for 20 years. After James’s death she remarried William Hays. He died in 1998.
Doris was a graduate of Towanda schools. She was employed by Dr. Burris, optometrist, C. W. Freys & Son for 10 years, and later, McLean County Health Department for 15 years until her retirement.
Surviving are her children, Brenda Dahlman and Barbara (Larry) Purdue; five grandchildren, Steve (Irene) Thompson, Alan (Erica) Thompson, Stacey Gammicchia, Jennifer (Sky) Bailey and Chris Weakley; eleven great grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, Adam, Valerie, Payton, Evan, Ryan, Camden, Mackenzie, Griffin and Revan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Larry; sister, Glenna; her son, David and son in-law, Herb Dahlman.
Doris was a member of the Money Creek Extension for over 50 years, the McLean County Historical Society and the DAR, as well as a member of the Baptist Church in Towanda.
She enjoyed attending the senior meals at the Towanda Senior Center in Towanda and visiting with her friends. For the past several years she has resided at Ironwood Assisted Living in Sandwich and in the past few weeks at Sandwich Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
She enjoyed calling bingo each week and baking for her friends. Doris was an avid collector of little glass shoes and covered dishes.
