COLUMBIA - Marjorie Faucett Patterson died on November 9, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born in Union, South Carolina on June 15, 1928, she was the youngest child of Benjamin Griffin Faucett and Bessie Kelly Faucett.

She was graduated from Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina. While a student there she fully participated in the life of the college. She was elected president of the student body and selected for inclusion in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Following her graduation from Columbia College, she continued to serve the school. She was an enthusiastic member of the Columbia College Alumnae Association and served as President of the Association from 1973-1975. She received the Columbia College Alumnae Association Distinguished Service Award in 1991. She was a charter member of the Columbia College Board of Visitors and the recipient of the Columbia College Medallion Award for a lifetime of service to the College.

Margie was a member of Shandon Presbyterian Church, where she spent countless hours in the work of her faith. She served several terms as an Elder and received an Honorary Life Membership in the Women of the Church of the Presbyterian Church from the Women of the Church of Shandon Presbyterian in 1983.

She was active in several civic organizations including the National Guard Association of South Carolina Auxiliary, the Richland County Legal Auxiliary, the Sasanqua Garden Club, and Alpha Zeta Sorority where she served several terms as President.

Margie reared six children who are eternally grateful for her loving, kind, and unwavering nurture. In 1995, she was chosen as the South Carolina Mother of the Year. She was honored by the Governor’s proclamation of Marjorie Faucett Patterson Day in recognition of her selection.

Her husband of 58 years, Grady L. Patterson, Jr., former State Treasurer and Air National Guard Major General, gave her full credit for his successful political and military careers.

She was predeceased by Grady in 2009. She was also predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Jack Faucett and Monroe Faucett; two sisters, Bessie Faucett Walden and Helen Faucett Lide; and two grandchildren, William and McClain Dryden.

She is survived by her six children, Grady L. Patterson, III (Sally), Steven G. Patterson (Katherine), Lynne Patterson Trowbridge (Tommy), Laura Patterson Timmons (John), Amy Patterson Shumpert (Jerry), and Beth Patterson Dryden (Will); twelve grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

Services will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 11:00 a. m. at Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow Street, Columbia, South Carolina, followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Dr. Lewis F. Galloway and the Reverend John R. Cook will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:30 until 7:30 p. m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Memorials may be made to Shandon Presbyterian Church, Columbia College, or the charity of one’s choice.
