Served originally in Company A, 34th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Severely wounded during Battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi and mustered out as Corporal. Recovered and re-enlisted and mustered in to Company F, 130th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry; elected as Lieutenant. Mustered out at War's end in 1865 with the rank of Captain.
