Joe Patterson, 71, of Olathe, passed away on March 1, 2019, at Olathe Medical Center.

He was born on November 17, 1947, to Joseph (“JH”) and Betty (McClaflin) Patterson at Cherokee, OK.

Joe worked as News Director for KOAM radio for 11 years. He then worked for American Fidelity Assurance Company for 28 years, serving school districts throughout Kansas. Both careers brought many accomplishments, awards, and lifelong friends.

He served as Chairman of the Crawford County March of Dimes Walk-a-thon for 10 years. He volunteered for many causes, including Operation Santa and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He also coached a wide variety of baseball and softball teams, including teams he played on, and teams for his wife and each of his children.

On September 6, 1968, he married Leanne Kay Helmer. They recently celebrated their 50th anniversary.

He helped establish Messiah Lutheran Church in Pittsburg, KS, and he served the church in many capacities. He also attended Good Shepard in Carthage, MO, Beautiful Savior in Olathe, KS, and most recently Christ Lutheran Church in Overland Park, KS.

Joe was an avid fan of baseball, especially the Kansas City Royals. He and Leanne just finished their 40-year quest to visit all 30 Major League ballparks. He also enjoyed studying presidential history, loved to travel, and visited 48 states and 12 countries.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Leanne; his children, Jeff (and his wife, Amy), Jill (and her husband, Tom Ring), Jolene (and her husband, Scott Hayes); his grandchildren Chae Patterson, Casey Ring, Josh Ring, Josie Hayes, Gwyneth Hayes, Kai Hayes; his niece Letitia Little and nephew Greg Perry; his sister Brenda Garrett (and her husband, Ron Garrett and their sons Shane and Jason); and his god-daughter, Christa Keesling (and her husband, Sean, and their children, Tyler, McKenzie, and Hailey).

He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant daughter, his sister, Judy Perry, and his nephew, Jerry Perry.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Overland Park, KS, on Thursday, March 7, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon for all.

A private burial will be held in Walnut Valley Memorial Park, El Dorado, KS.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Negro League Baseball Museum, providing underserved youth the opportunity to enjoy the sport Joe loved so much (1616 East 18th Street, Kansas City, MO 64108).
