CHATHAM- David A Dobson,71 of Chatham and formerly of Ishpeming passed away March 1,2019 after a brief illness. David was under the care of Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice, Myla and the staff of Whispering Pines and his long-time guardian Laura.

Dave was born in Ishpeming to parents Matthew and June (Asgaard) Dobson on April 23,1947.

Dave graduated with great pride from Ishpeming High School in 1967.

Dave then worked for the City of Ishpeming as a General Laborer on sanitation routes and at the Ishpeming Cemetery where he took great pride in keeping the grounds pristine with meticulous care. Dave retired after working 15 years and then moved to Marquette where he lived for several years & enjoyed attending NMU sporting events of his beloved Wildcats. Dave was involved in several ministry projects while residing in Marquette. If there was a dance available to attend Dave was the first one in the door.

Dave then moved to Munising MI where he spent many years as a regular visitor of the Senior Center and the Getaway Drop-In Center. Dave enjoyed his daily walks around the town of Munising where he became known by many area businesses and residents. Dave enjoyed haircuts with Bev at Angie’s and visiting with the staff of Peoples State Bank, Putvin’s and St.Vinnnie’s.

In 2013 Dave moved to Chatham but he maintained his visits to Munising, riding the Altran bus from Chatham to Munising twice weekly to visit longtime friends and play Bingo, Cribbage and Uno at the Drop-In Center. Several times a year special friend Angela would take Dave to Friday Fish Fry at the Moose Lodge.

While residing in Chatham Dave became a member of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Eben Junction, where he was known to sing “loud and proud” and always requested special prayers for people special to him. Dave enjoyed attending church activities and visiting with the congregation. Every week Dave anticipated the calls from his brother Norman and his Aunt Shirley so as to fill them in on the adventures of his weeks. Dave enjoyed watching Packer Football and his dear NY Yankee baseball team. He enjoyed reading Westerns and his Bible and completing word search puzzles.

In late July every year Dave looked forward to the arrival of the Alger County Fair and Chatham Homecoming Parade. Special friend Emma would take Dave to pick his favorite wildflowers. Dave would make a beautiful arrangement and then enter the display in the Alger Fair exhibits. Every year he received a ribbon and just last year his proudest moment was taking a Grand Champion Blue Ribbon for his flowers.

Dave enjoyed numerous outings over the last 6 years with his guardian Laura. Trips to the Dairy Queen for his favorite banana split, that he knew he shouldn’t have but did anyway. Trips to Superior Central Cross-Country meets, basketball games and his yearly assistance at the Junction Gold Sugarbush making maple syrup. Dave enjoyed the Pictured Rocks Boat Cruise and the Shipwreck Tours trip several times. If there was a potluck Dave could attend, he did and would be heard stating “I will be there and Laura will make my favorite Marshmallow Fluff that I will bring”. The joy of conversation was ever present in Dave.

Dave enjoyed twice yearly visits with relatives in Ishpeming, his favorite being his surprise 70th birthday party at the Marquette Pizza Hut. Dave enjoyed shopping at Shopko and reminiscing about the journeys and adventures of his youth in Ishpeming.

Dave’s gentle spirit and mischievous smile and friendship will be missed by many. Dave’s phenomenal memory of his life events always amazed those in his life. To be on this earth and be happy in life’s daily adventures was enough for Dave. This past Monday 2/25 Dave stated “I guess the Lord wants me home”. We know Dave is wrapped in the loving arms of his parents and friends who went before him.

Dave is survived by his dear brother Norman and sister- in- law Grace of Ohio, Nephews Steven Todd, Ronald Norman, Nicholas Lee, Jeffrey Matthew, several great nephews and great nieces, dear aunts, uncle and cousins.

Dave was proceeded in death by Father Matthew and Mother June Dobson.

Dave’s family will greet relatives and friends at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home on Saturday March 9, 2019 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. Dave’s memorial service will start at 2:00pm with Rev. Thomas Schierkolk officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery in the spring.
