Mattie June Hatch Hill passed away Thursday, February 21st 2019 in her home in Lordsburg, New Mexico, attended by her family. She was 93. She was born June 14, 1925 to George Lynn Hatch and Julia Maude Croff in their new, two room adobe house in Virden, Hidalgo County, New Mexico. June was the fifth of six children, with older brothers George McKnight “Mack” and Harvey, and sisters Myrtle and Ruth and a younger brother, Roy.

June was raised on the family farm in Virden where her father grew potatoes and various other crops. Born in the Great Depression days, she was raised in a family with very little money in what she described as, “…a family rich in love”. She had great friends in Virden and described wonderful times on the Gila River and Sunset Ditch that watered the farms.

June graduated from Virden High School in 1943 and soon after had various jobs, including working at the POW camp East of Lordsburg. In 1945, she went on a date with Allen Hill, on leave from the Navy, who had agreed to go to a dance with “that skinny little girl from Virden”. He soon realized he had been gone for awhile, and she was not so little, and not so skinny!

Allen returned to duty in Long Beach and in October, 1945, June boarded a bus and headed for California in spite of hearty protests from her father. Allen and June were married in Long Beach, California on October 14, 1945. The wedding almost didn’t take place, as June was 20 years old and one had to be 21 to get married without parental consent in California. It was then they discovered a mistake had been made on her drivers license, which showed her birthday as June 14, 1924. The rest is history.

After the war, the couple moved to Salt Lake City where Allen held various jobs. It was there that the oldest of six children, Jeanne and Mike were born. They moved to Logan, Utah where Allen attended and graduated from Utah State University. It was there that their third child, Stephen, was born.

In 1953, after much persuasion from the local church officials, Allen and brother Cal and families agreed to return to Lordsburg, “just long enough to construct a new building” for the local congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In Lordsburg, the “Three Little Boys”, Dan, John and Bob were born. They never left Lordsburg, and services will be held in the same building they returned to construct.

June was always active in the Lordsburg Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in various capacities in Primary, Young Women’s, Relief Society and music.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Hill and her daughter, Jeanne La Marca. She is survived by sons Michael (Jeanine Stewart) Hanford, California, Stephen (Caron Reay) of Silver City, NM, Dan (Lori Ashley) of Aurora, Colorado, John (Marsha Allred) of Lordsburg, Robert of Lordsburg and son in law Fred LaMarca (Betty Farnsworth) of Lordsburg, 18 Grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on March 9th, 2019 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 9th and Pyramid in Lordsburg, New Mexico with Bishop Matthew Miller conducting, beginning at 11:00 AM. A viewing will be held at 10:00 AM on the same day.
