Allen Albert “Hook” Hill passed away Nov. 23, 2016 at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, NM.  He was 95.  Visitation will be from 10:AM - Noon, Saturday, Dec. 3rd at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lordsburg, NM.  A celebration of his life will be held at Dugan-Tarango Middle School at 1:00 PM.  Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Hook was born April 3, 1921 in Lordsburg, NM to Albert Hill and Fannie Allen.  He was the oldest son of 5 children.   He was a daring and adventurous child from the beginning, with many of his shenanigans inspiring stories and poems later in life.

A talented athlete, Hook played multiple sports but excelled in basketball.  At the time of his death, he was the last surviving member of the 1939 Lordsburg Maverick State Championship Basketball team.  He was proud of the family’s three generations of state champions.

After graduating from Lordsburg High School in 1939, Hook worked as a carpenter’s apprentice before joining the US Navy during WWII.  He served aboard a Destroyer Escort (Sub-Chaser) in the Pacific.  Soon after the War’s end, Hook married Mattie June Hatch on Oct. 14, 1945 in Los Angeles, California, and the two headed for Utah.

Hook graduated from Utah State University in Logan, Utah, became a licensed contractor, and the family returned to Lordsburg “for a short time” to build the LDS Church building.  (His viewing will be held in that same building.)  He was then asked to build the Animas LDS Church Building. Many more building opportunities followed and the family remained in Lordsburg where he continued his construction business until his death.

Hook was called to be Bishop of the Lordsburg Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1956.  He served in that capacity for19 ½ years, and remained very active in Church and Community throughout the remainder of his life.  His strong faith in God molded his character and made him the person we all know and love.

Be it construction, sports or life in general, Hook will always be remembered by many to be a talented athlete, inspiring teacher, wonderful storyteller and poet.  After semi-retiring from the building business at the age of 69, Hook drew on his years of building experience, teaching Shop at Dugan Tarango Middle School from 1989 to 1999 and received multiple awards during his tenure.

Always keeping his mind active, Hook enjoyed poetry and storytelling.   He performed in cowboy poetry gatherings throughout the Southwest and he and wife, June, organized the Bootheel Cowboy Poetry Festival in Lordsburg for 23 Years.  Hook always enjoyed a good joke. He never took himself seriously, and always believed humor could help get through any tough situation.   His mind and his memory, which served him well until the very end, were key enablers for his weekly column, “As I Remember”, published in the Liberal and Herald for many years. He was also one of the original founders of the Lordsburg Museum.

He was preceded in death by his parents Albert Hill and Fannie Allen, brother Cal Edsel Hill, sisters Mildred Hill Christensen and Sherrill Hill Hanchett and daughter Jeanne Hill LaMarca.  He is survived by his wife of 71 years, June Hill, a sister, Velma Lindsay, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Sister in Law, Patricia Hill of Bountiful, Utah, and 5 sons: Michael Allen Hill/ wife Jeanine Stewart of Hanford California , Stephen Dale Hill/ wife Caron Reay of Silver City NM, Danny Lynn Hill/ wife Lori Ashley of Aurora Colorado, John Albert Hill/ wife Marsha Allred Lordsburg NM, and Robert Roy Hill/ wife Andrea Case   of Lordsburg NM, 18 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren..
