MRS. MARY SANDFORD
WALLAROO.
Mrs. Mary Sandford, of Wallaroo, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. McMahon, Wallaroo, Thursday, June 23, at the age of 90, was one of the older inhabitants, and one of the pioneers of this State. She was the daughter of the late Levi and Mary Chatfield, and was born at George Street, Thebarton, on June 30, 1848. At the age of 19, at Seven
hill College, Clare, she was married to Mr. Robert Sandford by Father Strele, S.J. From Clare she went to the Echunga gold diggings in a bullock wagon, and lived in a "wattle and dab" hut, her honeymoon bed being four pine posts embedded in the ground, and a mattress lashed to them. Leaving the diggings, she went to Dunn's Bridge, and from there to Maitland, where she lived on a farm belonging to the late Mr. Tom Hogan. All her travelling was done in a bullock wagon. After leaving Maitland, the couple took up a new farm at Tippera, and from there moved to Wallaroo Mines, where she lived for seven years. Mrs. Stanford came from Wallaroo Mines to Wallaroo 43 years ago, and later opened her well-known boarding house in Stirling Street. Ten years ago, on the death of her husband, she sold the
boarding house and took up her residence with her daughter Polly (Mrs.McMahon), with whom she lived until her death. For the last forty years of her life Mrs. Sandford was blind, but until a few weeks before her death she could
still sew threading the needle with her tongue. She had a cheerful disposition, and was affectionately known as "Gran" to everyone. Mrs. Sandford was a convert to the Church in her very early girlhood, and was a most devout Catholic to the end. There were eleven children, seven of whom are still living, viz., W. Sandford (Wallaroo), Mrs. Anderson (Wallaroo Mines), Mrs. Skinner (Darlington), F. Sandford (Crafers), J. Sandford (Frances, S.E.), Mrs. T. McMahon (Wallaroo), and Mrs. A. L. Brown (Port Adelaide). There are 32 grandchildren, 37 great-grand children, and 1 great-great-grand child. Of the five brothers and three sisters of Mrs. Sandford, only one sister (Mrs. T. McKee, Hallett, late
of Wallaroo) is still living. The funeral left the home of her daughter, and the bearers were Messrs. J. Gepp, E. Ingram, J. Phyllis, and Jos. Doyle. Rev. Father Crowley officiated at the graveside, and Mr. G. H. Seeley carried out the funeral arrangements. (From the Trove Website).
