Melvin L. Freeman, Jr, 79, of Olathe, KS passed away Feb. 21, 2019 at Olathe Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Thursday February 28, 2019 at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main Gardner, KS. with burial following at Spring Hill Cemetery, Spring Hill, KS with Military Honors. Visitation will be 9:30 am an hour before the service. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com

Melvin was born March 3, 1939 in Kansas City, MO to Melvin Leland Freeman, Sr and Esther May (Brown) Freeman. He grew up in Kansas City, MO, where he graduated from high school. Melvin married Helen M. Soetaert on May 22, 1965 in Gardner, KS. where they lived until moving to the farm in Spring Hill, KS in 1979, later on moving to town. Melvin retired at 68 years old from Smith and Loveless in Lenexa, KS as a welder. He was a member of the Union Steelworkers and Divine Mercy Catholic Church. Melvin enjoyed western movies and from that passion he built a replica of a western town by hand. The project took him 3 years to complete and was enjoyed by many. He will be dearly missed by family and friends. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Melvine Burke. He is survived by his wife Helen of 53 years; children: Craig Freeman and wife Angie of Spring Hill, KS, Scott Freeman and wife Ivonne of Las Vegas, NV, and Shane Freeman of Lawrence, KS., and his sister Frances Lindgren of Kansas City, MO; 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
