American humorist. He moved to Boston in 1833 where he established his trade as a printer . Failing health, led him to British Guiana and returned in better health after several years. In 1840, he became editor of the Boston Daily Post and introduced his character 'Mrs. Partington'. In 1851, he and Charles G. Halpine founded the first comic periodical, the Carpet Bag. A sixteen year old Samuel Clemens would have an article published in it in 1852. He continued at other papers then went on to become a lecturer and publish nine books.
