Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Saturday, January 26, 2019

Abbie Kenner DeVault, 55, of Norfolk, died Thursday, January 24, 2019. She was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Robert H. Kenner and Edith Itzkowitz Kenner. Abbie was a life-long learner, teacher, and activist. She graduated early from Granby High School and went on to teach Jewish Sunday school classes at Congregation Beth Chaverim, at Tidewater Community College, tutoring in the Writing Center, and on faculty at ECPI University. An avid reader, she loved fantasy novels and science fiction, often invoking their themes into her daily life. She delighted in surprising people with her penchant for heavy metal music. Most ardently, however, Abbie loved and supported her family and friends. She championed their causes as her own, becoming a fierce activist for LGBTQ equality and environmental justice, in addition to her own passions for healthcare rights and reform. Recently, she assumed leadership roles in digital advocacy and support groups for those, like her, living with Crohns disease. Survivors include her husband Edward of Norfolk, son, daughter-in-law, and beloved granddaughter Eric, Amy, and Danielle of Chesapeake; siblings Marybeth Kenner Saunders and her husband Kenneth of Virginia Beach, Debbie Kenner Pearl of Virginia Beach, and Michael Kenner of Los Angeles; and nieces and nephews Hilary Saunders, Kevin Pearl, and Robi Kenner across the country.Graveside Funeral Services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery, on Monday, January 28, at 10:30 a.m. with Rabbi Marc Kraus officiating.Memorial donations may be made to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation.
