Hubert Austin Mitchell, 92, of Lafayette, died at St. Elizabeth Hospital at 11:55 a.m. Monday, May 28, 2007. Born in Benton County on July 9, 1914 to the late Braffett W. and Bertha Ethel (Shanks) Mitchell, he was a lifelong area resident. He married June (Shaw) Mitchell in Lafayette on October 28, 1933 and she preceded him in death on February 5, 2006. Mr. Mitchell was a machinist at Ross Gear for 30 years, retiring in 1979. Prior to that he was employed by Leaman Welding and Machine Co. for 9 years. He was a member of Congress St. United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge. He enjoyed flying, and had a private pilot's license, snowmobile riding, boating, fishing, traveling, and sports. He was an avid Purdue basketball fan.

Survivors include a son: H. Eugene Mitchell (wife, Lydia) of Lafayette, and two daughters: Shirley M. Shrum (husband, Billie) of Romney and Joanne Pontius of Lafayette. Eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild also survive. Preceded in death by a grandson: Ronald White, and three brothers: Charles, Clifford, and Harold.

Services were entrusted to Hippensteel Funeral Home of Lafayette, Indiana.
