Sanford Allen Battershell was born on August 16th, 1840, near Paris, Edgar Co, Illinois, and died at his home in Clancy, this county, on May 6th 1913.
At the age of seven years Mr Battershell moved with his parents from Illinois to Kentucky, where he resided until the opening of the civil war. He enlisted in the 7th Illinois cavalry, serving in the war as a sergeant in Company A. Upon being discharged from the army he made his home in Illinois, but moved from there to Kansas in 1873. He was married on Nov 30, 1885, to Miss Letha J Naylor, his wife died on Jan 4, 1891. He came to Montana in the fall of 1886, and barring a few visits to the East in search of health, has been a continuous resident of Jefferson County ever since. He had been a member of the Baptist church for 35 years, living a conscientious life. He is survived by five sons, Wm P, Francis A, Sylvester A, Burnett O, and Louis N; also three daughters, Mrs J G Rein, Mrs A S Hersey and Mrs J J Zigan.
After a brief service at the residence in Clancy, conducted by Rev L B Putnam, pastor of the Clancy Methodist church, as requested by the deceased, interment was had at the old cemetery in Jefferson City. The pall bearers were M A Hayne, Ernest Marks, Wm Cooper, Jacob Grobe, of Clancy; P H Park, of Corbin and Geo Cockrell of Jefferson City.
