Leet was born October 4, 1926 in West Jefferson, NC to the late Hannibal Roscoe and Lena Poplin Vannoy.
Leet was a veteran of WWII and proudly served on the USS Hissem Destroyer Escort 400 as S1C. He worked for New Jersey Zinc Company as Mill Superintendent in Austinville until his retirement. Leet had a degree in civil engineering from NC State University.
Leet is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Phipps Vannoy. Also deceased are a brother, Kyle Vannoy(188636848) and two half-sisters, Annie Gray and Sue Colvard.
He leaves behind three children, Pat Vannoy Host (Mike), Edie Vannoy Hurt, Neil Vannoy (Joy) and a brother-in-law, Steve Phipps and his wife Wilma of Lansing, NC. Leet had 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Leet lived an active and healthy life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid reader of books on US History, the Civil War and WWII. He liked bagpipe music, trains, and picking blueberries on Massie Gap and Mt. Rogers. He was a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and VFW and annually placed flags on veterans’ grave sites. He also served on the Austinville Fire Department, Lead Mines Ruritans and on the Board of Wytheville Community College.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday February 15, 2019 at West Jefferson Municipal Cemetery in his hometown of West Jefferson, NC, where he will be laid to rest beside Mildred, facing Mt. Jefferson.
