James Edward Ayers died of pneumonia just a month short of his 40th birthday. According to his obituary in the Portland Daily Press, this well-liked man had been known in his younger days as "Nibsey" Ayers, when he "was quite prominent as a catcher and first baseman on the famous Resolute Ball Club, and a noted batsman." He worked making trunks, and lived with his mother and sisters at 25 Parris Street, Portland, Maine.
