Joseph McGuinness took part in the 1916 Easter Rising, serving at the Four Courts.
He was sentenced to ten years penal servitude and was sent to Lewes Prison. When there, he was nominated (against his will) as the Sinn Fein candidate for a bye election in South Longford. He defeated the Irish Parliamentary Party candidate by 37 votes, after a recount. As a result, all of the republican prisoners were released from Lewes in June 1917.

Joseph McGuinness, son of Martin McGuinness and Rose McGuinness, formerly Farrell, was born on 12 April 1875, at Cloonmore, Rooskey, Co. Roscommon.
His father was a Farmer.

Joseph McGuinness, a bachelor, a Draper, from 28 Cumberland Street, Dublin, son of Martin McGuinness, a Farmer, married Kathleen Farrell, a spinster, from 20 Lower Dorset Street, Dublin, daughter of Patrick Farrell, on 10 August 1909, at St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Marlborough Street, Dublin.
