IRGINIA BEACH - Geraldine Midgett Ashburn lived from June 5, 1922, to Jan. 31, 2008. Gerry was born in Poplar Branch, N.C., to the late Ralph and Elizabeth Midgett. Gerry grew up on a cattle farm on Rosemont Road with four brothers, Ralph, AB, Jimmy and Bobby Midgett.

Through her young life, she became a distinguished equestrian, winning many awards which included Reserve Champion of the state of Virginia. During World War II, she served with the American Red Cross in Europe at a POW camp helping our troops. After returning from Europe, she continued her quest for perfection in the world of horses. Taking her passion and knowedge to the next level, she began Great Neck Stables. She taught thousands of young people how to ride. She still continued her own love through fox hunting, horse racing, dressage and high level horse show performances. Her exceptional experiences were later honored by her many invitations to be a judge for those same horse shows she once particpated in. Her love for horses touched many lives who shared her passion. During her career with horses, she facilitated many charitable events to benefit local community needs. After retiring from the horse business, she joined the Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary remaining active for more than 25 years.

As a continued blessing in her life, her two children, Willard R. Ashburn III and Elizabeth Ashburn Froehling remember how hard she worked and how much she accomplished. Gerry now has two granddaughters, Jessica Ashburn Teves and Francesca diMare Ashburn.

The family has requested a private memorial, but asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the United States Equestrian Team, Equi-Kids or the American Red Cross.
