On Sunday, January 27, 2019, Nila Velásquez passed away at Presbyterian Rust Medical Center in Rio Rancho, NM.
Antonia Lionila Padilla was born on June 13, 1947 in Anton Chico to Antonia and Luís Padilla. She was the second of their seven children.
On June 24, 1966, Nila married Joaquín Velásquez. They had four children.
Nila worked for many years as site manager for Health Centers of Northern New Mexico, formerly Centro Campesino de Salud, and after retiring from there, continued her career as a construction contractor.
Nila was a carpenter and seamstress. Nila also enjoyed many seasons as a green chile vendor in Las Vegas. Nila loved to cook and was always ready for guests at her home with a bowl of posole, beans and chile.
Nila was just as comfortable in the ranch building fences and working with livestock or in the mountains cutting wood. Nila loved to spend time in her yard pulling weeds and watching the flowers open for the bees and hummingbirds that came to visit.
Nila loved her Ford trucks, her Denver Broncos and listening to Hank Williams, Garth Brooks and New Mexican Spanish radio all in the company of her loyal puppy, Storm.
Nila was grateful for the love and support of so many family and friends who remained by her side throughout her illness including Marcella Cooper and Eileen LaRiva-Herrera she cherished each and every one of her large extended family. Their love sustained her spirit as her body fought illness for so long. The joy she felt when visiting with them eclipsed the pain in her earthly body.
Nila was preceded in death by her son, Valentín Velásquez, parents, Luís and Antonia Padilla, husband, Joaquín Velásquez, brothers, Louis, Enrique, Felipe and Jacobo, nephews, Derrick Padilla, Felipe Padilla and Adam Padilla, brother-in-law, Jesús Gutiérrez and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Aragón Padilla and Priscilla Padilla.
Nila is survived by her children, Jaclyn Velásquez, Michael and Lisa Velásquez and Howard Velásquez, grandchildren, CJ Márquez, Justin Leyba and Kyndell, Amber Leyba and Russel, Michaelann Velásquez and Adrian and Anisa Armijo, great granddaughters, Jaelee, Pelaiah, Karter, sisters, Gloria Gutiérrez, Helen and Bernie Cano, brother, Loren Padilla, nieces and nephews, Louis Padilla, Laura Padilla, Brenda and Walter Darnell, Viola and Rick Darrow, Consuelo Cano and Rocco, Bernardo and Alissa Cano, Mario Cano, Francisco Padilla, Victoria Padilla, Olivia Padilla and Adrianna Campos.
