Thelma Mae Giles Hughes of Appomattox, Virginia

Thelma Mae Giles Hughes, 97, of Co-op Lane, Appomattox, died peacefully on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Appomattox Health and Rehab Center. She was the wife of the late Sidney W. Hughes.

Born in Nelson County, Va., on October 31, 1921, she was the 5th of six children and the last living child of Charles Lee Giles and Lader Mae Loving. Thelma was a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and part-time caregiver. Thelma had a great sense of humor, was loved by many, and was a friend to everyone she met.

She is survived by one son, Roger Dale Hughes (Debra); three daughters, Nancy Davis, Patsy Pierce (Tim), and Doris Hudson (Bob) all of Appomattox; five grandchildren, Ursula Hamlett (Joey), Sharon Irvin (Roger), Kevin Pierce, Christina Pierce, and Danielle Rowland (Jarrett); four great-grandchildren, Shana Irvin, Sydni Rowland, Hudson Rowland, and Maddox Rowland; one great step-grandchild, R. D. Irvin; a brother-in-law, Clyde Hughes of North Dakota; two sisters-in-law, Ann Hughes of Lovingston and Donna Hughes of New Jersey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, George T. Giles and Charles J. Giles; three sisters, Elizabeth Johns, Florence Bryant and Mary Purvis; and a son-in-law, Paul McClary.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at Liberty Baptist Church by the Rev. Jonathan Watson. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., on Monday, February 4, 2019, at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the home of Patsy and Tim Pierce.
