Yvonne entered Oglethorpe University in the fall of 1956 and planned for a spring wedding in March, 1957. The wedding took place on March 22, 1957 at Center Hill Baptist Church. They took a 3 day honeymoon at Fontanna Village in the Great Smokey Mountains (NC).
Yvonne became a housewife and mother until Chris started school. Then she returned to college to work on her degree, mostly at night, During this time she taught Kindergarten at Mt. Pisga Baptist for a year. She was also the organist at Lithia Springs First Baptist. She graduated from Oglethorpe University in 1971 and began teaching at Lindley Jr. High which became Lindley Middle School. Yvonne was "Teacher of the Year" in 1991, She taught there 27 years before retiring in 1998.
Yvonne Scales Jones, age 80 of Austell, passed away February 1, 2019. Yvonne graduated from West Fulton High School in 1956 and graduated from Oglethorp University with honors. Yvonne retired after 29 years from Lindley Middle School. She was the church organist for many years at Lithia Springs First Baptist Church and a current member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church. Yvonne loved to travel in her spare time.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucille Maddox Scales and Otis F. Scales; son, Charles “Chuck” Jones Jr.
Yvonne is survived by her husband, Charles R. Jones; daughter and son-in-law, Christiana “Chris” and Danny Brooks; daughter and son-in-law, Clarissa and John Payne; sister, Pat Egan; grandchildren, Jonathan (Lindsey) Brooks, Ashley (Erin) Jones, Timothy Brooks, Kimberly Payne, Kira Payne, John Payne Jr.; 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Sunday, February 3, 2019 at 2:00PM. She will Lie In State from 1:00-2:00 PM at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church with Dr. Randal Whitten officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Harmony Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday February 2, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 PM at the funeral home.
