Born on May 13, 923 to Augusta Josephine Cox Hays and Jessie Livingston Hays in Batesville, Mississippi, she lived most of her early years in Charleston and graduated from East Tallahatchie High School. She attended schools in Chicago and New York City, ultimately returning home where she met and married John Talmage Shelton in 1947. They made their home in Lambert where they raised five children. Sarah was an active member of First Baptist Church in Lambert where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir. She was very active in The Homemakers Council of Quitman County She moved to Jackson in 1989 and became a member of First Baptist Church of Jackson where she joined The Reflections Choir. She resided at the Waterford for many years and was known for always caring for others first. She loved bridge and would play for hours on end with her friends. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and would often send them notes of encouragement. Sarah was devoted to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and possessed a servant's heart.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 41 years, her sister Laura Hays Crumpler, her granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Shelton, and her great-grandson Andrew Shelton Burton.
Sarah leaves behind to cherish her memory her 5 children, Dr, Walter Rowan Shelton ll (Beverly) of Brandon, John Talmage Shelton, Jr. (Marilyn) of Belzoni, Lauris Edwin Shelton of lsola, Joe Garland Shelton ( Barbara) of Savannah, Tennessee and Velmarie Shelton Burton (Greg) of lsola, 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Dravet Syndrome Foundation or First Baptist Church Jackson.
Visitation will be held from 11:30 - 1:00 pm Saturday at First Baptist Church Jackson with funeral service to begin at 1 pm in the Chapel. Mrs. Shelton will be laid to rest at Shelton Cemetery, Hazlehurst, MS.
