Passed away Monday at Bickford Assisted Living.

Daughter of Bert and Lynee Lynch Brainard.
Married Dwight Walters. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Myra Dunn (Paul) Abbott and Melinda Rogers; grandchildren Elaine (Dan) Ricks and Tagg (Natasha) Rogers; great grandchildren Hayden (Loveza), Sarah and Wyatt (Adriana) Buckner, and Austin Ream.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, sisters Marian Cougar and Mildred Bell.

Graduate of Darlington High School, Indiana State Teachers College and Butler University.

As a teacher, she saw education advance from four grades in one room in Shannondale to teaching students in Darlington and later at a modern facility in Indianapolis at Stephen Decatur Elementary School.

Member of Tri Kappa Sorority, Indiana State Teachers Association and First United Methodist Church.

She was an avid Bridge player and golfer and supported her girls in Brownies, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and many other endeavors, traveled with her family on annual vacations throughout the United States, and to Europe as chaperones for students in the Ben Davis High School Marching Band.

Margaret drove her car, played Bridge and enjoyed dining out well beyond the age of 100. She continued to play Scrabble on Sundays with her good friend, Betty Armstrong.

She was very proud of her Brainard lineage, which she could trace back to Daniel Brainerd, who came to America as an indentured servant in 1641. She attended two Brainerd Society reunions in Haddam, Connecticut, and it was notable that Margaret was one of four generations that included her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter.

Services 2:30pm Sunday, February 3 at Burkhart Funeral Home.
Visitation 1pm until time of service.
